The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts 16 percent growth for dentists, or faster than the average of all jobs, between 2012–2022; 18 percent growth for physicians and surgeons; 24 percent growth for optometrists; and 14 percent growth (average growth) for pharmacists.
But health professions schools are competitive. The Master of Science in Biology for the Health Professions is a post-baccalaureate pre-medical program for academic record-enhancers. It is designed to strengthen you as an applicant for professional health schools, including medicine, dentistry, optometry, and pharmacy.
- This 12-month, non-thesis program accepts Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT), Dental Admissions Test (DAT), or Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores for admission.
- You may earn the degree on campus or online, part-time or full-time.
- If you wish to obtain hands-on laboratory experience, you may choose lab classes as electives.
- Illinois Tech is a major research institution with a long history of educating biology master’s degree students, and preparing students for professional school.

The Master of Science in Biology for the Health Professions requires 32 credit hours to complete, with 22 hours of required courses and the remainder elective courses. Up to 9 credit hours of electives may be 400 level courses. No more than 9 credit hours may be non-BIOL courses. Applicants to the program may use DAT, MCAT or GRE scores for admission. GRE scores: Quantitative + Verbal minimum score of 305; Analytical Writing minimum score of 2.5; or DAT minimum score of 17; or MCAT minimum score of 25; with minimum GPA waiver.
